CJBG: An Advanced Conservation Practitioner

October 2019

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) works to preserve botanical diversity and brings together over 800 botanical gardens in 120 countries. It has recently recognised the CJBG as a BCGI Accredited Advanced Conservation Practitioner, meaning an expert botanical garden specialising in conservation.

CJBG: An Advanced Conservation Practitioner

The BGCI accreditation highlights the remarkable work carried out at the Conservatory and Botanical Garden of Geneva in conservation both ex situ, i.e. within the institution, and in situ, i.e. in nature.

This award recognises the skills and expertise of CJBG staff and comes after a rigorous and uncompromising international analysis.

Close cooperation

Every day the CJBG works with the Cantonal Office for Agriculture and Nature (OCAN) to monitor plant diversity and put measures in place to protect endangered species in the Canton of Geneva. Its work includes propagating endangered plants followed by reintroducing them into the wild or developing management plans. The institution also manages one of the most important seed banks in Europe and the only one in Switzerland, containing several hundred endangered species. This ensures long-term conservation of viable seeds collected in the wild and used for the ecological restoration of lost environments. The need for a balanced approach between scientific research and horticulture applied to wild plants is of particular relevance here.

The CJBG in the prestigious circle of accredited institutions

This accreditation sees the CJBG joining the Atlanta Botanical Garden (USA), the Chicago Botanic Garden (USA), Denver Botanical Gardens (USA), Native Plant Trust-Garden in the Woods (USA), Meise Botanic Garden (Belgium), the Missouri Botanical Garden (USA), the Montgomery Botanical Center (USA), the Morton Arboretum (USA), the National Botanic Garden of Wales (UK), the North Carolina Botanical Garden (USA), the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, Sydney (Australia), the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (UK) and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia (USA) in the highly prestigious circle of institutions accredited by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI).
